I have a question from a reader named Erik. He asks:

“What are your top three favorite books on copywriting?”

When I started out, I read books by Bob Bly. Those really helped me understand the lay of the land of the land.

Over time, I started reading other types of books. Ones that helped me not only understand the structure of copywriting, but other things like human behavior and psychology. I’d like to share three of those books with you now.

1. Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think
Why the hell am I recommending this book by Brian Wansink on food psychology?

Because it’s about human behavior. It covers counterintuitive ideas, like how we eat M&M’s because they’re colorful. Or because the bowl is close to us. That’s a surprising look at human behavior, and it’s a fascinating read.

2. The Robert Collier Letter Book
This is a collection of ads and sales letters from decades ago. They sold things like overcoats and umbrellas.

It’s the kind of stuff that most people don’t read, because it’s not a “top 10 copywriting tactics” list. But if you read the book and study it, you’ll be ahead of everyone else. Pay attention to the old writing style. It’s different than it is today, but the persuasion principles are the same.

3. Age of Propaganda: The Everyday Use and Abuse of Persuasion
This third book is by Pratkanis and Aronson. I love it because it is research-based. It shows you why people do the things they do. And it reads like a beautiful narrative.

It’s another one of those books that most people don’t read. But it is absolutely awesome in understanding human behavior.
