Getting “permission” to start your business

This is a tricky question from JJ. He writes:

“My employer specifically prohibits employees from pursuing any outside income, including starting an online business. I know it’s not illegal where I live, but I could get fired if caught.”

I don’t know the full details of the legal situation, but I will tell you two key things.

First, if you’re serious about starting an online business, then you should go through the process of finding out what it would take. If you have to, you can consult with a lawyer or check with your company’s HR person. The worst thing you can do is let this problem linger and fester in your head.

Second — and I think this is more important — a lot of us are looking for permission to succeed.

I’ll be honest with you. I can’t give you permission to start your business. Assuming you’re able to get legal clearance with your company, you’ll need to decide “Is this something I really want to do?”

I get a lot of questions from people who ask, “Ramit, what do you think about an idea like this?”

On the surface, it seems like a simple question. But what they’re really saying is, “Hey, Random Guy on the Internet, wearing a checkered shirt, can you say it’s okay for me to go and start this business? Because I need your blessing.”

You don’t need my permission. It’s your permission to give yourself.

This is very different from what we were taught as kids. Starting in kindergarten, we had to raise our hand. “Mrs. Kundle, can I go to the bathroom?” “Yeah, you can go to the bathroom, Timmy.”

We had to get permission for everything we did.

At a certain point though — and this is scary — there is no one to ask permission from.

It’s your decision.

If you decide to do it, I’m going to support you. If not, that’s okay too. But it’s up to you, not me.

We put together a field report, showing you how one of our students took her idea, slightly tweaked it, and boosted her income massively.
