Here’s a common question from Cassandra. She asks:

“What are the best new small business ideas?”

I’ll be honest with you, I don’t really like this question. But it’s one I get asked all the time, so it’s worth addressing.

The reason I don’t like this question is because if you read between the lines, what it’s really asking is, “Can you give me a business idea that I can easily make a ton of money with?”

But you don’t build a great business by just hopping on some trend. If you start a business with this as your only motivation, you will fail.

I don’t say that to be mean. I say that to protect you from all the horrible advice out there. There are tons of people peddling cheap advice that say, “Go start a social media consulting company. It’s ALL the rage right now! You’ll be rolling in dough.”

The better approach to starting a business is to ask: “What do customers really want?” or “How can I solve X problem for people?”

To show you how this works, I want to show you three examples of real businesses our students built following this technique.

Let’s start with Julian W. He helps yoga instructors create playlists for their classes.

Julian’s site, Yoga Teach Grad School

Kind of weird, right? But just think about it: There’s a need for that in the market, and those yoga instructors are happy to pay him to solve their problems.

In fact, he earned more than $3,000 just a few days after launching his first product online. All from a business that most people wouldn’t even think exists.

The next example is Danny M. He’s a professional copywriter who helps freelancers earn more money online.

Danny’s site, Freelance to Win

He sold more than $30,000 of his courses in a single month — and earned over $100,000 less than a year after starting his business.

Most people wouldn’t even consider his idea to be viable, but because he focuses on helping his customers and solving their needs, his business has exploded.

The last example I want to show you is Felicia S. She’s a charisma coach who helps clients build rapport and increase their confidence.

While her business might seem kind of weird, she’s been profiled in Business Insider and easily generates over $10,000 every month in revenue.

I love these examples because these people are not hopping on some business trend. They’re doing something you can’t even find with a Google search. Yet they’ve still built wildly successful businesses.

Most people are looking for a quick idea to jump into. “What app can I sell to make 99 cents?”

But these students took a totally different approach. They started by asking, “What do the buyers want and how can I serve them?”

And as a result, they’re making substantial amounts of revenue.
