When a friend in the podcast promotion business approached Rob about turning his book, Tacocity, into a podcast, Rob laughed.
“I said, ‘I don’t listen to podcasts, so I don’t even know what I would do. But thanks for lunch, and I’ll see you later,’” he remembers.
Less than two years later, that podcast Rob Gokee wasn’t going to make is coming back for season two — and picking up sponsorships from brands like HelloFresh. He also has a second podcast gearing up for launch — the beginnings of a veritable podcast network.
There’s an important lesson here for any aspiring entrepreneur: it doesn’t matter if you’re not a pro in the medium you’re thinking about pursuing. You can figure that part out along the way. What matters is that you have a passion for your topic, and for sharing that passion — and your knowledge — with the people who can use it.
The best content creators get there by committing to being connoisseurs of their craft. You can start right now:
- If you want to start a podcast, go listen to a lot of podcasts.
- If you want to write an e-book, go read some e-books.
- If you want to build an online course, take a look at a lot of online courses.
When you do that, a funny thing will happen: you’ll start noticing certain patterns and characteristics of what you’re looking at — and you’ll develop a taste for what works, and what doesn’t. That’s what happened for Rob.
Also in the episode, Rob shares his top three strategies for growing an audience, plus some can’t-miss tool recommendations for those who want to dip a toe into the podcasting pool.
