The 3 best ways to get traffic to your website

Today’s question is:

“How do you get traffic to your website?”

This is basically the philosophical question of the 21st century. The answer is: There are a couple of major levers that you can pull.

Now I’ve said it before, and I’m going to say it again because people tend to want to jump off into random tactics: Stay focused!

There are a few major things you should do — and you should start doing right now. Ignore the other advice and follow these three steps.

1. Write truly remarkable content on your site and set up an email list

I wrote on my blog for years without having an email list. It was one of the biggest business mistakes I ever made. It cost me millions of dollars.

What I should have done was write amazing material and at the end say, “Hey, if you’d like to learn more, sign up for my email list.”

Very simple. Don’t make the same mistake I did.

2. Write guest posts on high-traffic blogs

The strategy behind guest posting is knowing: OK, you have your site. It’s got a small amount of traffic. And you need to go where there’s a lot more traffic.

It works like this:

Find websites that are bigger than you and have more readers than you.

Then go to them and say, “Hey, love what you wrote about X. I’d love to contribute something on Y. Here’s the outline. I will take care of all the work. I’ll even do the HTML for you. All you have to do is copy and paste it in.”

Most people love that kind of offer.

And at the bottom of your guest post you say, “Hey, my name is Ramit Sethi. I write about psychology in business. Click here to learn more.”

Suddenly all that traffic reads your post, then clicks over to your site. And if they like what you have to say, you now have all these new email subscribers.

Do this over and over again. Do not get distracted.

3. Appear as a guest on podcasts

This one is kind of weird. Podcasts do drive email subscribers. They also grow your business. But not in the way you would think.

When I’ve appeared on podcasts, I’ve been careful to measure what happens. We’ve learned that they’re probably not the most effective way to drive email subscribers.

But most importantly, if you’re a likable person, they make people like you. And people want to buy from someone they like!

If you can appear on podcasts that have a substantial number of listeners, that’s another good strategy that I would test for your business.

The good news about all of this is that you don’t have to get bogged down in too many different social media strategies. You can just focus on these two or three things, and your email subscribers and traffic will grow.
